Fire Station Garage Coatings in Utah: Inside Our Layton City Fire Station Project

5 min read

When a garage floor needs to handle the weight, traffic and daily demands of fire apparatus, the coating system has to be built differently.

MDRN Concrete Specialties recently completed another fire station garage coating project for Layton City, Utah. This is the second Layton City fire station we've had the opportunity to work on, and the project is a great example of the type of preparation and coating systems we install throughout Utah.

The scope included extensive concrete grinding, a basecoat, Poly-Flex joint filling, a polyaspartic topcoat and a urethane topcoat.

We also did something a little different with the yellow parking lines for the fire trucks.

Instead of simply painting the lines over the finished floor, we incorporated yellow flakes into the coating system itself, creating a much more durable solution for such a high-traffic environment.

The entire system was designed around one thing: durability.

A Fire Station Garage Floor Has to Handle Serious Use

Fire station apparatus bays aren't ordinary garages.

Heavy fire trucks repeatedly travel over the same sections of concrete. Tires turn and stop in consistent locations. Equipment gets moved across the floor. Water, dirt, snow and road contaminants are brought inside throughout the year.

For Utah fire stations, winter adds another challenge. Fire apparatus can bring snow, slush, road salt and deicing chemicals directly into the bays.

That makes the preparation and coating system especially important.

A fire station garage coating needs to do more than make the concrete look better. It needs to create a durable, maintainable surface designed for the environment where it's being installed.

Three Days of Concrete Grinding

One of the biggest parts of this Layton City project happened before the coating was ever installed.

We spent three days grinding the concrete.

Surface preparation is one of the most important parts of a professional concrete coating system, particularly on a large commercial floor like a fire station.

Grinding mechanically profiles the concrete and prepares the surface for the coating system. It also allows us to address the existing condition of the floor rather than simply applying a new product over the top.

This isn't the glamorous part of a coating project, but it's one of the most important.

A coating system is only as good as the surface it's bonded to.

For this project, taking the time to properly grind and prepare the apparatus bay gave us the foundation we needed for the rest of the system.

Poly-Flex Joint Filling

After preparation, the project included Poly-Flex joint filling.

Concrete joints are an important consideration on large commercial floors. Rather than ignoring them during the coating process, we addressed them as part of the overall flooring system.

The Poly-Flex joint material provides a durable treatment for the joints while still allowing the finished floor to have a much more complete, professional appearance.

On a project of this size, details like joint treatment make a noticeable difference in both the appearance and performance of the finished floor.

A Multi-Layer Coating System Built for a Fire Station

The Layton City fire station floor wasn't completed with a single coat of material.

We installed a system consisting of a basecoat, polyaspartic topcoat and urethane topcoat.

Each layer plays a role in the finished system.

For commercial environments, we're looking at much more than color or shine. We're considering adhesion, wear, chemical exposure, traffic, cleanability and the long-term demands placed on the floor.

That's especially important in a fire station.

When large apparatus are moving in and out of the building every day, the floor needs to be designed for actual use—not just for how it looks when the project is finished.

Yellow Flake Lines Instead of Painted Parking Lines

One of our favorite details on this project was the yellow lines used to guide the fire trucks into their designated positions.

Traditionally, those markings could simply be painted onto the finished floor.

We took a different approach.

Instead of relying on painted yellow lines, we created the lines using yellow flakes incorporated into the coating system.

Why?

Durability.

Painted lines sit on the surface and can wear as tires repeatedly travel over them. By incorporating the yellow flake into the flooring system, we were able to create highly visible apparatus lines designed to hold up much better under repeated use.

It also gave the finished floor a clean, intentional appearance.

For a facility that depends on those markings every single day, it made sense to build them into the system rather than treating them as an afterthought.

Our Second Layton City Fire Station

We're proud that this isn't the first fire station we've completed for Layton City.

It's our second.

For us, repeat work matters.

Municipal and commercial projects require communication, scheduling, preparation and the ability to execute a coating system correctly on a much larger scale.

Being trusted to complete another Layton City fire station is something our team takes seriously.

It's also representative of the commercial concrete coating work MDRN Concrete Specialties can provide for fire departments and municipalities throughout Utah.

Fire Station Garage Coatings Throughout Utah

MDRN Concrete Specialties provides commercial concrete coating systems throughout Northern Utah, the Wasatch Front and surrounding areas.

For fire departments considering a new apparatus bay floor, resurfacing an existing floor or replacing a failing coating, we can evaluate the concrete and build a system around the needs of the facility.

Our capabilities include concrete grinding and surface preparation, joint treatment, polyaspartic coatings, urethane coatings, traction systems and custom floor markings.

Whether it's a single apparatus bay or a larger municipal facility, the process starts with properly understanding the concrete and how the floor will be used.

The Same Level of Preparation Goes Into Our Residential Garages

There's another reason we like showing projects like this one.

Most of our residential customers aren't parking a fire truck in their garage.

But we approach their concrete with the same mindset.

The equipment, preparation standards, coating knowledge and attention to detail that allow our team to complete a municipal fire station are brought to the residential garages we coat throughout Utah.

When we grind the concrete in a homeowner's garage, we're not treating it like a lesser version of our commercial work.

The concrete still needs to be properly prepared. The coating still needs to bond. The details still matter.

That's one of the biggest differences between a professionally installed garage coating and a system designed primarily to make the floor look good for a little while.

We build floors to be used.

Commercial-Grade Garage Coatings for Utah Homes

If you're a homeowner looking at this Layton City project and thinking, I don't need anything this heavy-duty, that's understandable.

But that's also part of the point.

You can hire the same company trusted to grind, prepare and coat a working fire station to install the floor in your own garage.

Our residential garage coatings are designed for the things Utah homeowners actually deal with: vehicles, hot tires, snow, road grime, salt, tools, storage, spills and everyday use.

Whether we're standing inside a Layton City fire station or a two-car garage at someone's home, our approach doesn't change:

Prepare the concrete correctly and install the right system for the space.

Utah Fire Station and Garage Floor Coating Contractor

MDRN Concrete Specialties installs professional concrete coating systems for residential, commercial and municipal properties throughout Utah.

We've now completed two Layton City fire stations, along with commercial facilities, large residential garages and specialty concrete coating projects across the state.

If your Utah fire department is considering a new fire station garage coating, apparatus bay coating or concrete floor restoration, we'd be happy to look at the facility and discuss the right system for the space.

And if you're a Utah homeowner looking for a garage floor that receives the same level of preparation and attention we bring to our commercial projects, we'd be happy to help with that too.

From fire stations to home garages, we build concrete floors for real-world use.
